People interested in working for some of the UK's largest contract catering firms look to set to play a key role in a new drive designed to get Brits to eat more healthily.
Aramark, BaxterStorey, Compass Group, Elior and Sodexho have teamed up with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) to introduce a new set of voluntary steps to adapt food preparation techniques and provide nutritional information to customers who eat the two million workplace meals prepared by contract caterers every day.
Rosemary Hignett, head of nutrition at the FSA, said: "We strongly welcome the commitments these businesses have made, which will enable people to make sensible choices about their diet, no matter where they eat.
"We'd like to see more businesses do the same and intend to develop this work further."
Several contract catering firms have already taken steps to address concerns over healthy food, with Elior's Balance educational programme continuing to win praise.
According to the firm, around 850 people employed in chef, catering manager and support roles across the group are currently involved in administering the scheme.
