Restaurant wins healthy food award

A restaurant operated by a contract catering firm has been named Health Conscious Restaurant of the Year at a prestigious awards ceremony in Scotland.

The Evening Times reports that the team at Alfie's restaurant, which serves up healthy dishes to staff members at business support services firm Alfred McAlpine in Uddingston, was given the gong at the Scottish Restaurant Awards.

Catering manager Peter Bowyer was presented with the award by judge Angela Tod, who told the newspaper that the panel had looked at the range of healthy eating options at each of the short listed restaurants, as well as the ingredients and preparation techniques used.

"Alfie's was a clear winner. It is great to see a workplace restaurant compete with well-established city centre eateries," she commented.

Alfie's is run by Eurest, a division of contract catering giant Compass Group.

Earlier this month, Compass announced it would take part in a new Food Standards Agency initiative designed to ensure that consumers have a wide choice of healthy meals available to them.
