Chef training scheme proves successful

An Aviemore hotel has trained five previously unemployed young people to become professional chefs, it has been reported.

They represent the first students to graduate from the course - run by the Macdonald Aviemore Highland Resort in the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland - and have all been offered interviews for jobs, according to the Press and Journal.

Operated by various employment and skills agencies, including Springboard Scotland and the Highland Employer Coalition, the scheme is aptly known as Quick to the Cut and is a responsive measure to remedy the large number of chef vacancies in the region.

Having completed training in four different kitchens, the five graduates all received Level 2 Scottish Vocational Qualifications.

Roisin Taylor, Springboard operations manager for the Highlands and Islands, told the publication: "It is fantastic to see that the programme is receiving a lot of positive comments, and hopefully the programme graduates will have successful careers in the industry."

This accomplishment follows in the footsteps of the pioneering project run by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver at his restaurant Fifteen, in which he coached a group of underprivileged youths to potentially become chefs themselves.

Macdonalds Hotels and Resorts earned two national awards back-to-back last year, one from the AA for Hotel Group of the Year and the National Customer Services Award for Leisure and Tourism.
