Inspired by reality TV vocation-led programmes such as The Apprentice and Hell's Kitchen, two licensed institutions in Essex have teamed up to run a chef competition to seek out "home grown talent", it has been reported.

The Pheasant and the Thatchers Arms will be running a one-day schedule of cooking classes and tests which will result in two talented chefs being selected, according to the Publican.

Aiming to increase career prospects by providing professional qualifications for budding trainees, the pubs see the importance in "bridging the industry's skills gap", the publication suggests.

Mitch Adams, pub managerof the Thatchers, told the newspaper: "We serve freshly cooked local produce and the main hurdle we have to overcome is finding chefs."

After impressing judges with an evening meal following the day's culinary training, the two winning chefs will proceed to complete kitchen apprenticeships which will hopefully result in vocational qualifications.

The concept of Hell's Kitchen is for leading celebrity chefs to train a group of amateur cooks up to the standard where they can serve high-quality dishes to the public.
