People in UK catering jobs should try and make sure produce they use is localised in order to reduce their business' impact on the environment, according to one expert.

Alan Francis, transport spokesperson for the Green Party of England and Wales, said that at the moment the logistical links around the country are not expansive enough and need to be improved.

"Production and distribution has become so centralised these days that very often some products will go several hundred miles one way and then make an identical return trip to the retailer," he stated.

The expert added that his party wants to see more localised production of food and more localised distribution warehouses so that they can reduce carbon emissions.

In other news, the Mirror recently reported that after a successful Christmas period, the food firm has decided to expand its operations in the UK and predicted the number of Greggs shops will rocket to more than 2,000 within six to seven years.
