McDonald's is to offer teenagers who complete a period of work experience with the fast-food chain the chance to gain a BTec certificate in recognition of the skills gained.
The fast-food giant worked closely with exam board Edexcel for the initiative and a spokesperson for the latter said the certificate is fully accredited and equivalent to one GCSE at grade B or C, which could benefit those looking for hospitality jobs.
"Whether people join McDonald's for two weeks' work experience or a full-time job, the aim is helping them build their confidence, gain transferable qualifications and fulfil their potential," commented David Fairhurst, personnel chief at McDonald's.
Youngsters will be asked to complete a ten-day placement at a McDonald's facility, which will cover 80 per cent of the work required for the qualification, adding up to the 80-hour study requirement for a standard BTec certificate.
KentOnline.co.uk recently reported that McDonald's is to create 30 restaurant jobs in Kent.
