North-east 'benefits from tourism'

People working in hotels in the north-east of England take care of 8.6 million guests every year, new figures have revealed.
Tourism North East said that tourists eager to explore the fascinating history, culture and countryside of the region help provide 55,000 workers with jobs, representing 5.2 per cent of the total number of people in employment.
The bustling city of Newcastle is having a particularly significant impact on hotel jobs in region, with the Newcastle Chronicle reporting that the number of bedrooms available had increased by 1,000 over the last year alone.
Stacy Hall, director of communications and tourism at development agency One NorthEast, told the newspaper: "Our historic sites including Hadrian's Wall and Durham Castle and Cathedral have always been popular with tourists."
"In recent years the Baltic and the Sage Gateshead have attracted a new wave of national and international visitors to the region."
The growth in tourism to the north-east looks set to continue, with One North East announcing a new advertising campaign designed to lure more people to the region.
