Wirral council has approved plans for a £12 million hotel to be created on Merseyside's Seacombe waterfront, bringing future opportunities for hotel jobs and restaurant work.

Based on information from the tourism department, Wirral council attributes the decision to the increase in visitors to the area in 2005-2006, which increased the demand for "modern hotel accommodation" in the area by 19 per cent.

Hospitality jobs are expected to be created as, according to the Wirral Globe, the complex will include 91 bedrooms, a restaurant and a bar.

Peel Holdings, the property company behind Manchester's Trafford Centre and Liverpool John Lennon Airport, is responsible for the scheme.

The proposal includes the refurbishment of an historic listed hydraulic tower, the extension of which will house the restaurant and bar.

"I believe that Peel have come up with a wonderful solution. I have seen the work done by Peel on transforming old buildings in Manchester and it looks excellent," planning committee member David Elderton told the newspaper.

The Tower Road site is part of a multibillion-pound regeneration scheme for the Birkenhead docklands, which will also include a new marina, a retail complex and leisure centre.

It has been predicted that completion of the entire development will take 30 years and create 27,000 permanent jobs across all sectors, including the hospitality industry.
