Planning permission for the largest luxury hotel in the North of England - to be built in countryside between Harrogate and York - has been granted, bringing 500 new jobs to the area on its completion in 2011.

Construction of the five-star complex, hailed by the Yorkshire Tourist Board as a "landmark" in the region's hospitality industry, is expected to cost £100 million.

Joanna Ryle, the board's marketing director, told Big Hospitality: "This kind of quality development is just what we need to ensure the tourist economy continues to thrive and we compete globally in the industry."

Paul Ellis, director of the project's York-based development company The Skelwith Group, told the York Press of his high ambitions for the project: "There won't be one pool, but two in the hotel's £5 million spa - one for exercising, the other for lolling."

Rooms are expected to cost up to £800 per night, reflecting the opportunities that will be present in this venture that is already getting a lot of attention.

Work is expected to begin later this year.

Those looking for an opportunity within the hotel industry should keep their eye out for updated details.
