The Columba Hotel in Oban in Argyll is set to undergo major renovations to make it a four-star establishment, according to a source, creating 60 local jobs in the process.

Under the new £3 million plans, a modern bar and restaurant and a venue for conferences and banquets will be built, the Press and Journal reports.

The project, taken on by the McKever Group, will involve the integration of a dilapidated former museum which will be transformed into the function centre and an ex- rogue gap clothing shop next door which will become the new eatery.

Ally McKever, chairman of the hotel owners, told the publication: "Our plans will secure [the town's] long-term future and really enhance the waterfront. Oban badly needs a prestigious hotel with first-class event and conference facilities."

They are now pursuing detailed planning permission from Historic Council, following approval for the project from Argle and Bute council.

He also emphasised how they would be seeking the "majority" of the hotel's new staff from the local area, reflecting an exciting opportunity for seekers of hotel careers.

Glasgow-based McKever currently owns 14 hotels in Scotland.
