Hotel jobs in Edinburgh could be boosted following news that the Scottish capital has seen a surge in occupancy rates.

Data from business advisors PFK shows that in April occupancy was 77.2 per cent, six per cent higher than during the same period in 2008.

This was the first year-on-year increase seen in the city since December 2007 and came despite a rise in hotel space.

City leaders have suggested that Edinburgh's strong calendar of events has helped attract tourists, while Alastair Rae, a partner in the property and hospitality sector at PKF, told the Scotsman that the strong dollar and euro are helping to boost visitor numbers.

Councillor Tom Buchanan, the city's economic development leader, told the newspaper: "A range of activities, festivals and events will help cities across the UK do well, particularly as more people are wanting to stay in the UK and take a holiday at home."

Recent data released by Deloitte highlighted that improvements have been seen across the sector and while revenue for available rooms is still negative, the pace of decline is reducing.
