Britain's beaches are certainly not the dirty and rubbish-ridden places they are sometimes claimed to be, it has been argued.
Dickie Felton, media manager at Keep Britain Tidy, said stunning coastal landscapes remain "an integral part of the visitor experience" and are ready and waiting to welcome visitors this summer.
In comments which may boost hospitality recruitment in north-west seaside towns such as Blackpool, Morecambe and Southport, he claimed that 2009 is officially one of the best on record for the quality of England's beaches.
Mr Felton added that coastal resorts offer "a great opportunity" to people looking for a low-cost, stress-free way of taking a break in the coming months.
He stated: "England's beaches achieved 72 Blue Flags and 113 Quality Coast Awards this year in recognition of their high-quality environments and facilities.
"Far from people travelling abroad this summer, we firmly believe people will holiday at home. Our beaches are in great shape."
Tourism chiefs in Blackpool recently launched a marketing campaign designed to attract more visitors from continental Europe to the sandy shores of west Lancashire in a bid to support the many hotel, hospitality and chef jobs existing in the town.
