The need to provide guests with a fantastic customer experience during London 2012 could lead to the creation of new hospitality jobs in the capital and surrounding areas, it has been suggested.

David Rushton, director of UK field sales at Accor Hotels UK, said that while there was unlikely to be an emergence of scores of new accommodation facilities in the run-up to the Games, additional employees and a more flexible workforce will be required.

He commented: "Hotels have to run very differently during the 16 day period. It is a 24-hour business and it is also about gearing up staff differently, you have to have tremendous flexibility."

Mr Rushton added that some duties could be delegated to contract catering jobs suppliers, but in-house preparation will also be needed over the next four years to ensure hospitality staff are prepared to carry out Olympic jobs duties successfully.

According to PKF Hotel Consultancy Services, occupancy rates across London's hotels increased 1.3 per cent year on year in May, from 81 per cent in 2008 to 82.1 per cent this year.
