Tourism legacy could sustain Olympic jobs

The London 2012 Games will not only create short-term Olympic jobs, but also a lasting tourism legacy for the UK, it has been reported.

According to Robert Wright, managing director of public relations agency Davies Tanner, the UK economy will benefit by up to £3 billion as visitors pour into the UK from abroad.

Although he suggested that the way the UK emerges from recession will have some impact on takings within the tourism industry, he predicted that business travellers will generate up to £1 billion alone.

Extra meetings and conferences staged in the capital after the Games will help support local businesses – perhaps sustaining hospitality jobs – it is suggested.

The Business Visits & Events Partnership claimed recently that business travel is worth over £22 billion to the UK each year in terms of its wider economic impact through associated visitor expenditure on travel, entertainment, shopping, pre and post conference tours.
