High occupancy creates hotel jobs hope in London

London hotel bookings held up well during the first five months of 2009, it has been reported.

According to accounting and business advice firm PKF, occupancy across London's hotels increased 1.1 per cent year on year in May, it is claimed, from 81 per cent last year to 82.1 per cent this year.

This compared favourably to the regions, where occupancy fell 5.6 per cent on the same period last year.

PKF partner Robert Bernard, who is responsible for hotel consultancy at the firm, said occupancy rates were in excess of what they were in 2008 prior to the onset of recession, helping employers to sustain hotel jobs in the capital.

He noted that considering the impacts of the downturn on consumer spending, the London hotel market is doing "very well", even if price reductions have been implemented.

David Rushton, director of UK field sales at Accor Hotels UK, suggested that further hospitality jobs could be created in London in the run-up to the 2012 Olympic Games.
