More than a fifth of UK families are set to head to the capital on holiday this summer, meaning further hospitality recruitment could be required in London.

The city has topped a new survey of the UK's favourite holiday hotspots, with the popularity of attractions such as Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and the Tower of London seemingly undiminished.

According to Garmin, which carried out the study, a quarter of families will head to the capital's museums during their break for educational purposes, while another 25 per cent intend to make a series of historical outings around the tourist sites.

One in ten families plan to use open top bus tours to take in the sights and sounds of London, the research indicates.

A spokesperson from VisitBritain said the fact that there are plenty of accommodation, dining and shopping options in London also appeals to visitors.

He added: "London is one of the world's most popular destinations with a wealth of attractions. Whatever appeals to visitors, they'll find something to enjoy in the capital."

Last week, it was reported how external work on the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge London hotel – which will create up to 800 hospitality jobs when opened - had been completed.
