New hotel jobs could be created in Hampshire as the county's cricket club starts to expand its ground.

The Rose Bowl will undergo £48 million worth of work and the improvements being made include new stands and a 175-bedroom hotel.

Commenting on the news, Rod Bransgrove, chairman of Rose Bowl plc, said: "This is a fantastic day for the Rose Bowl and Hampshire Cricket and all our supporters, staff and stakeholders as it marks the tangible beginning of our redevelopment programme."

The project is being partly funded by Eastleigh Borough Council which has injected £30 million into the scheme.

It is expected that the scheme will be finished by the summer of 2011, meaning the hotel jobs should be on offer by the time the ground hosts its first Test match.

Bristol City is another sporting club which could offer hotel jobs in the future.

Local councillors have said they are minded to approve plans for a new stadium which include a hotel.
