New hotel jobs could be created in Northern Ireland as the Merchant prepares for a £16 million expansion.

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph, Bill Wolsey, who owns the hotel, explained that he plans to add 38 new rooms, a roof-top garden and a jazz bar as part of his expansion plan.

He unveiled his proposals at a gathering of tourism and political figures.

Mr Wolsey said: "The innovative facilities will allow us to further grow our profile as an international standard bearer for Northern Ireland's tourism and hospitality industry."

The hotel, which is located in Belfast's Cathedral Quarter, will also gain a luxury spa and gym during the expansion.

Work on the redevelopment is expected to be complete by next summer.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that hotel jobs have been created in Belfast with the opening of the first Ibis branded development in the city.

The franchise is set to open three more hotels in Northern Ireland over the coming years.
