Hotel jobs in Berkshire could be created if plans to replace Broadmoor psychiatric hospital with a new modern unit are given the green light.

The hospital has been home to some of the UK's most notorious killers such as the Yorkshire ripper, Peter Sutcliffe.

A spokesman for West London Mental Health NHS Trust, which owns the Broadmoor site, explained that plans to build a new hospital alongside the existing buildings are currently with the Department of Health, but parts of the current site which are no longer needed by the NHS could be sold.

He said: "A possible buyer might wish to adapt the buildings for a number of uses – which might involve hotel or housing facilities – but there would be planning constraints due to some of the buildings being listed."

Last week, it was reported by the Scotsman that renovation work north of the border could also yield jobs, with a new restaurant being planned as part of a £5.4 million upgrade of Inverclyde's historic sugar mills.
