Travelodge has opened a new 82-room budget complex in Newcastle-under-Lyme, creating 20 new hotel jobs in the community.

The £3 million facility was jointly opened by the leader of the council, councillor Simon Tagg and the Mayor of Newcastle-under-Lyme councillor Ann Heames.

Marking the opening of the new Travelodge, 12 budding artists from Wolstaton High School designed and created artwork to highlight the town's famous landmarks.

Along with councillor Heames, the hotel's manager Peter Gossage helped to judge entries, with the five winning pieces being showcased in its reception for all guests to view.

"Tourism and business are vitally important to our local economy and so I am delighted that Travelodge is opening its first hotel here in Newcastle. I am pleased to see that despite the current economic difficulties we face, businesses are still willing to invest within our great town," added councillor Heames.

Earlier this week, the Scotsman revealed that hundreds of jobs could be created by Travelodge and Tesco at Edinburgh's Haymarket gap site after plans were revised.
