Eco-conscious hotels 'growing in popularity'

A growing number of hotels are recognising the importance of offering travellers more eco-conscious options, an expert has claimed.
Ayako Ezaki, director of communications at the International Ecotourism Society, has highlighted the fact that the mainstream tourism industry is beginning to recognise the demand for more sustainable practices.
She said that travellers are increasingly seeing the impact that their choices can have on the world around them and are taking this into account in their choice of hotels.
Among the other people who will benefit from this trend are those with restaurant jobs in establishments that have a strong local ethos.
Ms Ezaki said: "Whenever possible, [they] choose to eat locally-produced food - by shopping at local markets, going to a locally-owned restaurant and choosing menu items with locally-sourced ingredients."
Recent figures published by Travelocity found that green hotel bookings were 65 per cent higher than their non-green counterparts in the first quarter of 2010.
