The 400th establishment opened by Travelodge was given an official seal of approval when mayor of London Boris Johnson attended the launch, which also coincided with the group's 25th anniversary.

London Waterloo is the new hotel and means that the company now has 34 establishments in Greater London, providing over 5,200 bedrooms.

Guy Parsons, chief executive of Travelodge, said that the new site is a perfect example of how Travelodge has evolved over the past 25 years.

"With 52 hotels set to be open across the capital in time for the Olympic Games, we will be able to ensure that visitors to London are able to stay in high quality, low-cost accommodation, whatever their budget," he said.

London Mayor Boris Johnson added that tourism is a vital industry in London that supports more than 250,000 hospitality jobs and shows Travelodge's confidence in the capital as a place to invest.

The hotel chain recently announced its resignation from The British Hospitality Association after Mr Parsons decided the company would be better off representing itself rather than lobbying via the association.
