Many hotel jobs could be created if plans to transform a former school in Edinburgh are approved.

Donaldson's School for the Deaf, which opened in 1850, is set on 18 acres of land near to Haymarket Station.

The school moved to Linlithgow two years ago and the building has been empty ever since, the Scotsman reports.

Site owner Cala is said to be on the brink of scrapping plans to build 135 luxury flats in and around the building.

Cala confirmed to the newspaper that the site has attracted lots of interest from a number of top hotel brands.

"The nature of the … building and its immediate environment could be attractive to a hotelier. The 18-acre site would enable additional facilities associated with the five-star destination resort concept," a spokesperson for the house builder said.

Earlier in the year, the Edinburgh Evening News reported that work had started on a new civic building, which is set to include a community cafe, creating many catering jobs in Edinburgh.
