Irish hotel prices fell by four per cent in the first six months of this year, a recent study has shown.

This was revealed by the Hotels.com Hotel Price Index (HPI), which found that the current average room rate for a hotel in Ireland is now €79 (£66) per night, compared to €82 in the second quarter of last year.

Ireland is now the least expensive destination in western Europe, being beaten only by the Czech Republic (€76), Poland (€74) and Hungary (€70) when it comes to being cheapest in the whole of Europe.

Seamus MacCormaic, director of market management in the UK and Ireland at Hotels.com, noted that the Irish hotel market is recovering more slowly than other countries.

"However, the rate at which Irish prices fell slowed considerably with only a four per cent drop compared to 21 per cent in the previous HPI," he added.

Meanwhile in Northern Ireland, the BBC recently reported that the Beannchor Group had won planning approval for the construction of a music centre with a bar in Belfast.
