Northern Ireland could see a boost in hospitality recruitment through plans to develop a four-star hotel in the Lisburn area.

Environment minister Alex Atwood gave the green light to the project after being impressed by the potential economic and tourism benefits it brings to the region.

The hotel, which will include a health suite and function room, is set to be constructed on Hillsborough Road, in the south of the city.

"It will enhance the range of tourist accommodation in the area and boost visitor numbers to the benefit of local shops, restaurants and businesses," said Mr Atwood.

He added that his aim and the remit of the Department of the Environment is to make Northern Ireland a better place in which to live and work.

Michael Williamson, a director in hospitality at chartered accountants ASM, told the Belfast Telegraph the current layout of hotels around the area forces visitors to Lisburn to travel to Belfast for accommodation.
