People working in hotel jobs in London enjoyed a successful year in 2011 despite the global economic slowdown and a dip in consumer confidence, according to the latest survey from TRI Hospitality Consulting.

Profit per room in the English capital's hotels went up by 4.7 per cent last year, mainly because of a 6.1 per cent increase in revenue per available room.

The average room rate for hotels in London rose to £131.03 last year, while overall profit per room in the provinces dropped by 3.2 per cent.

TRI Hospitality Consulting managing director Jonathan Langston said: "Despite a challenging economic backdrop, London hotels have again outperformed expectations by showing profit growth in 2011."

He added that events like the London 2012 Olympic Games would offer a boost to the hotel sector throughout the new year.

A survey from Choice Hotels Europe recently found that just over half of its hotel managers expected trade to increase in 2012 thanks to the Olympics.
