People in hotel jobs in the UK saw a record number of tourists visiting the country in 2011, according to figures released by domestic tourism specialists VisitBritain.

It noted that overseas visitor numbers increased by three per cent year on year over the course of 2011, reaching 30.6 million, with 12 million of these visits being for tourism purposes.

Furthermore, visitors spent a record £17.8 billion while in the UK, a five per cent increase from 2010.

This has been attributed to a number of factors, including the strong pound providing value for money for many international tourists.

Patricia Yates, VisitBritain director of strategy and communications, said: "We want to make sure we capitalise on these gains by helping to boost jobs across the country and create a lasting tourism legacy for many years to come."

The chairman of the Association for Cultural Enterprises John Stachiewicz recently suggested Britain's cultural landmarks are set for a busy 2012 as events like the Olympics boost tourism.
