Quality service from staff in hotel jobs and the increasing vitality of the UK tourism sector are tempting Britons to stay in the country for their annual holiday, according to the Holiday Trends 2012 survey from BDRC Continental.

It found that 58 per cent of respondents are considering taking their main holiday in the UK, as opposed to 23 per cent planning to visit Spain.

Staycationing proved especially popular with families, as the proportion of parents with children who expect to take their holiday in Britain jumped from 38 per cent in 2009 to 70 per cent in 2012.

Steve Miles, BDRC Continental director, argued that the growth in domestic tourism is not merely down to financial concerns.

"Holidaying in the UK has become a positive choice. Standards of service and accommodation are undoubtedly improving and people are re-discovering what the UK has to offer," suggested Mr Miles.

The chairman of the Association for Cultural Enterprises John Stachiewicz recently suggested that people will flock to Britain's cultural attractions in 2012.
