Luxury golf resort set for Northern Ireland

Environment minister Alex Atwood has given hospitality recruitment in Northern Ireland a welcome fillip with the news that a luxury golf resort is set to be developed along the north coast of Antrim.

The £100 million development is expected to create around 360 jobs for the sector and comprise a hotel and conference facility as well as an 18-hole golf course.

Mr Atwood said the decision had been a difficult one, given the proximity of the site to areas of outstanding natural beauty such as the famous Giant's Causeway, but added that he felt the economic benefits are too substantial to ignore.

"The development is an important one ... for Northern Ireland. It will help to grow tourism, create new job opportunities, enhance our golf product and continue to protect our natural heritage," the environment minister argued.

Managed by the National Trust, the Giant's Causeway is one of Northern Ireland's biggest tourist attractions and a Unesco World Heritage Site.
