When it comes to customer service, hotels and restaurants are showing other industries the way forward, according to a recent survey, which placed both in the top five sectors for quality service.

The report from moneysupermarket.com showed that hotels were considered the second best places to find top customer service, beaten only by hairdressers, with restaurants and coffee shops coming in fourth.

"Providing a top quality service to customers is something far too many providers fail to see the benefit of. Yet a reputation for bad service can be difficult to shake off and many more consumers are feeling empowered enough to switch providers if they have a bad experience," said Kevin Mountford, head of banking at moneysupermarket.com.

People looking for hotel jobs and restaurant work could be interested in the research, which showed that estate agents, energy companies and banks were regarded as offering the worst customer service.

Hilton-owned Hampton Hotels brand recently announced it is to set up new establishments in Birmingham, Braintree and Shrewsbury, with the move creating an additional 500 rooms in the country.
