Hospitality sector 'must be flexible in 2012'

People in hospitality jobs across the UK will need to embrace change in the new year if they wish to do well, food service consultancy Horizon has advised.

Falling consumer confidence and an increasing unemployment rate will make things difficult for the restaurant industry, it claimed.

However, the sector's ability to reinvent itself and adapt to the changing demands of consumers mean it can continue to be profitable.

The Coffer Peach Business Tracker found that pub and restaurant sales had risen for the eleventh consecutive month in November, in contrast to the retail industry where sales dropped by 1.6 per cent on a like-to-like basis.

Horizons managing director Peter Backman praised people within the industry who had helped create jobs and open new restaurants through their innovative approach.

Those "focusing on good quality for a reasonable price are those that will survive the year ready to focus on growth when consumer demand improves," he added.
