UK restaurant sector 'is improving'

Staff with head chef jobs across the UK may be pleased to hear the yearly Harden's restaurant survey has praised the strength and resilience of Britain's restaurant scene, noting that the south-east did not wholly dominate the rankings.

The guide is based on a survey of restaurant-goers, with over 8,000 contributors compiling 85,000 reports. It assesses an establishment's service and ambience as well as the quality of its food.

Le Gavroche is rated as London's top restaurant, while Heston Blumenthal's Fat Duck is recognised as the country's most talked-about eatery.

Co-editor Peter Harden said the sector is continuing to thrive despite difficult economic conditions.

"It does seem that the UK-wide trend towards improving restaurants, evident over the last five to ten years, is too strong to be easily derailed," he added.

A recent poll carried out by Caterer and Hotelkeeper magazine suggested the hospitality business could be given a boost in the coming year by the London 2012 Olympic Games.
