Pub and bar operators 'cautiously optimistic'

People in bar management jobs and other people working in the pub and bar sector enjoyed a year-on-year boost in sales over the Christmas period and are cautiously optimistic about the new year, a survey has suggested.
The report from the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR) shows 95 per cent of operators saw a year-on-year increase in trade over the three weeks from December 11th 2011.
It also revealed that many members feel the boost is slightly exaggerated because of unusually low figures last year, when heavy snowfall ground much of the country to a halt.
Kate Nicholls, ALMR strategic affairs director, said: "We will continue to lead the charge in fighting for the industry and promoting the hugely positive economic and cultural impact that pubs and bars have on the UK."
The ALMR is an industry body working with independent pubs, bars and restaurants in the hospitality sector. It works at various levels of the market in its attempts to help the industry thrive.
