Fast food restaurants 'increasingly popular'

Food service jobs are increasingly important to the UK's restaurant industry, according to the latest research from independent analyst NPD Group.
It found that that over 50 per cent of meals eaten out of home in Britain are likely to be consumed in fast food restaurants, representing a four per cent rise in the number of people eating in these kind of establishments since 2008.
This comes largely because of an increase in lunchtime visits, which account for 72 per cent of the industry's business and have increased by seven per cent in the last three years.
Guy Fielding, NPD's director of foodservice for Europe, said: "Consumers in London spent seven per cent more in restaurants this year and it is the quick service restaurants, serving burgers, ethnic dishes and chicken that have led that growth."
McDonald's is one establishment which epitomises the boom in fast food over the last few years, with plans to open 30 new drive-through restaurants in the coming year.
