Pubs and restaurants 'enjoy big festive boost'

People in restaurant jobs and others working in the hospitality industry saw a boost in trade over the festive period as like-for-like sales jumped by 9.9 per cent in December, according to the Coffer Peach Business Tracker.
The industry sales monitor found that total sales had increased by 13.7 per cent on a year-for-year basis, indicating the expansion in trade over the 12-month period and the new establishment and jobs generated by this push.
Peter Martin of Peach Factory pointed out that some of the increase is contingent upon the fact that last year's trade was disrupted by heavy snowfall, but argued that the overall trend in the market was positive.
"Despite the continuing economic gloom, people are still going out to eat and drink - particularly over holiday periods," he added.
The tracker analyses data from 23 of the UK's major hospitality brands.
A report from the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR) recently showed 95 per cent of smaller firms saw an increase in trade over the Christmas period.
