Fast food conglomerate McDonald's plans to generate 2,500 food service jobs in Britain over the coming year, taking its number of UK employees to 90,000.

Roughly 30 per cent of the jobs are expected to go to first-time workers in a bid to assuage youth unemployment in the country.

An extended period of investment over the last three years has given McDonald's a strong foothold in the UK as it refurbishes restaurants and opens new outlets.

Deputy prime minister Nick Clegg called the announcement "fantastic news" for the employment market.

"McDonald's has an excellent reputation for developing its staff with training and apprenticeship programmes," he added.

The chief executive officer of McDonald's UK Jill McDonald said the company hoped to help young people get onto the career ladder in a tough economic climate.

Fourth quarter results from McDonald's show a 7.1 per cent increase in European sales, with consolidated revenues growing by ten per cent.
