Pub management jobs could be on the cards at Spirit Pub Company over the next few years after chief executive Mike Tye announced plans to help the firm expand from its base in Burton.

The company plans to be "twice our current size and the best pub company in the whole of the country," Mr Tye told the Burton Mail.

Spirit was originally a part of Punch Taverns but broke away to form its own operation in August 2011. It has 803 branded bars and restaurants across the UK, including Fayre & Square and Wacky Warehouse.

Spirit saw the demerger as "a kicking point for growth, investment and improvement," Mr Tye added.

The chief executive admitted that the last two years have been fairly difficult for the pub industry, which has dealt with problems from the smoking ban to the rise in VAT and beer prices, but claimed he remains confident in the future of the sector.
