Hospitality recruitment has been given a boost in the north-east after local councillors approved plans for a leisure development in the region.

Moorgate Leisure Services intends to create 42 jobs as part of the scheme, which will include a bar, restaurant and function room.

It is expected to be built at the Mayflower Glass factory unit in Moor Lane.

This comes despite some concern over planning regulations, with issues raised over the prospect of increased traffic in the area and noise problems for local residents.

Councillor Jeff Milburn, Conservative member for Cleadon and East Boldon, was the sole member to vote against the proposal, which passed by 11 votes to one. He expressed the opinion that the area already had a sufficient number of licensed premises.

Ian Lyle, speaking on behalf of Moorgate Leisure Services, said: "We believe the level of employment is significant and the applicant already employs 100 people in the area."

The Shields Gazette reported earlier in the month that the plans were set to be rejected for running contrary to local and national planning policy.
