Restaurant recruitment in York looks set be handed a boost with the news that a former photographic studio in the Micklegate area could be transformed into an Italian eatery.
Silvano Scanu, a well-known local restaurateur, has submitted a planning application to the council and expects a decision to be made on the development by next month.
The York Press reports that Mr Scana is believed to have set up York's first ever Italian restaurant nearly 35 years ago.
A statement submitted to the council by planning consultants Raymond Barnes said: "The property is in a prominent location and its reuse would increase footfall in this part of Micklegate, to the overall benefit of the vitality and viability of the street."
However, Mr Scana's restaurant will be faced with slightly more competition nowadays, with celebrity chef Jamie Oliver planning to launch a branch of his Italian eatery chain in the city.
The York Press noted that restaurateur Michael Hjort, secretary of the York Hospitality Association, expects competition to increase as a result of Oliver's plans.
