Pub proposals outlined by trade organisation

People employed in pub manager roles in Ireland may soon be helping transform the pub sector as an influential trade body suggests that the industry needs to become more diverse.
Speaking to the Publican, Vintners' Federation of Ireland president Paul Stevenson, who represents 5,500 people working in the pub trade, said that with growing competition from off-licences, pubs need to up the ante in order to ensure that their customers are still keen to go out for a drink.
"The days of standing behind your bar counter expecting customers to come in are over. We have to realise that and move on," he said.
Mr Stevenson suggested that pubs could consider installing computers during the day, allowing the premises to be used as an internet cafe, and advised them to make good use of any function room space they have, renting them out to dance classes and other social groups.
He added that working hard to appeal to women may also be a good idea, pointing out: "If you get them, the men will follow."
An earlier study from researchers in Northern Ireland revealed that 73 per cent of women drink alcohol, making women a significant market for pubs and bars.
