Pub chain Adnams has revealed that it is optimistic about future trade and has seen profits rise despite challenging market conditions, it has been reported.

The firm employs people in hospitality jobs at 78 pubs - most of which are located in East Anglia - and runs two hotels in Southwold, as well as owning its own brewing operation which produces a range of cask beers.

According to the Publican, executive chairman Jonathan Adnams revealed that the firm had been able to weather the impact of changes, such as the smoking ban and bad weather, in 2007 and is hopeful about its future prospects.

He said: "In this difficult environment our robust performance is a testament to the strength of our brand, the quality of our people, our ability to innovate, and our track record of investing in the business to support future growth.

"We believe Adnams is well-positioned to meet the challenges of 2008 and overall we look to the long-term future with confidence."

Mr Adnams added that the firm plans to double its operating profits within five years.
