Pub jobs at the Halfmoon in Putney, south-west London have been saved by a Facebook group.

The live music venue, which has hosted famous musicians such as The Rolling Stones and Van Morrison since 1963, has been threatened by closure.

But plans to close the venue and reopen it as a gastro-pub caused uproar on the social networking site.

A petition to preserve the pub's current format started in November and was subsequently backed by 6,500 people.

Landlord Young's has listened to the cries from the public and decided to keep it as a music venue.

James Harris, venue tenant, told the BBC: "This was never just about jobs but about a part of our music heritage."

He added: "We still face tough times ahead, but at least we can move forward now and my staff and myself are thrilled and excited."

A recent study by PRS for Music and pub data specialists CGA found that playing music can help save pub jobs during the recession, with musical venues making 44 per cent more sales during the week.
