Lowering the tax on beer will help to boost pub jobs and avoid 7,500 being cut, according to one organisation, which said the government's plan to hike charges need to be scrapped.

The British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) stated that beer tax has risen by 20 per cent since 2008 and is due to go up by two per cent above inflation in this year's Budget.

"Beer is an iconic British drink, yet the impact of blunt duty increases has further hit our ability to generate economic activity to help pull Britain out of recession," he stated.

Brigid Simmons, the BBPA's chief executive, said that the government needs to recognise the social and economic value that low-strength drinks, such as beer, bring to the UK.

In other news, the Campaign for Real Ale has named the Kelham Island Tavern as its National Pub of the Year for 2009.
