Work is now underway on the £2 million renovation of a landmark building in Denbighshire, north Wales, with a number of pub and hotel jobs set to be created in the process.

The Castle Hotel, in St Peter's Square, Ruthin, is a Grade II listed building that closed earlier this year, but has since been purchased by UK pub operator JD Wetherspoon.

Construction workers have now moved in, with the painstaking renovation expected to take several months. The venue's grand reopening is scheduled for January 2012.

John Hutson, chief executive of JD Wetherspoon, said the revamped building would be an asset to Ruthin, bringing 45 hotel and pub jobs to the area.

"We are pleased to have completed the purchase of the Castle Hotel and are looking forward to redeveloping the site and opening a new-look pub and hotel," he added.

Meanwhile, in south Wales, JD Wetherspoon is due to open the Malcolm Uphill pub in Caerphilly this October.

The venue's name pays tribute to a local motorcyclist who was the first to average 100mph on a lap around the Isle of Man.
