West Suffolk pub bought by seven regulars

Bar staff jobs in west Suffolk have been saved after seven regulars at a Lidgate pub teamed up to purchase the freehold from Greene King.

The Star was at risk of closing following the retirement of the previous landlord and landlady earlier this month, but the 16th century property is now in the hands of the consortium, including new pub manager Steve Cook.

Speaking to the Bury Mercury, Mr Cook said people in the village had been anxious not to lose the pub, which he described as a "focal point" for community activities.

Since taking over, the new owners have been able to slash 70p from the price of a pint of beer and reduce food prices by as much as 30 per cent, he revealed.

Mr Cook added: "Now that we are a free house, we are not tied to where we source our produce."

The Star is one of Lidgate's main attractions, along with the village hall and St Mary's Church.
