Rock music fans attending the annual Reading festival in 2007 spent £560,000 on hotel accommodation during the event, a new study has found.

The event, which took place over three days in late August, saw world famous bands such as the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and The Smashing Pumpkins take to the stage, attracting thousands of devoted followers.

Sue Brackley, destination manager for Reading UK CIC, a company designed to promote the economic development of the area, told getreading.co.uk that festival goers filled approximately 2,000 hotel rooms.

However, it was not only those working in hotels that benefited from the increase in visitors, with Ms Brackley adding that hospitality businesses in general also profited from the event.

Cycling enthusiasts were also said to have helped boost the hospitality industry in Reading last year, with thousands of people flocking to the town to watch the progress of the Tour of Britain cycle race in September.

According to getreading.co.uk, 74 per cent of visitors questioned said that the tour had been the main reason for visiting.
