The hotel industry had an extremely successful 2007, new research has revealed.

According to figures from finance firm Deloitte's HotelBenchmark Survey, revenue per available room (revPar) increased by an average of 4.4 per cent across the UK.

RevPar growth in London was impressive, standing at 10.8 per cent as thousands of visitors flocked to the capital to attend events such as the prologue to the Tour de France cycle race in July.

People working in hotels in Scotland also saw significant growth.

RevPar in Abderdeen grew faster than anywhere else in the country, rising by 17.2 per cent in 2007, with Deloitte explaining that demand for hotel accommodation from people working in the oil industry had helped drive the increase.

Glasgow saw 10.5 per cent growth, with events such as the Uefa Cup final in May encouraging people to visit the city.

Marvin Rust, hospitality managing partner at Deloitte, commented: "2007 has been another good year for the UK hotel market, with strong gains in many UK cities."

He explained that the hotel industry in London was likely to receive a boost in the years to come, explaining that "demand is strong with the increasing focus of the world on London as we head for 2012".
