Forming part of a new prospect centre in Barking, Essex, a local restaurant is intending to transform the circumstances of unemployed individuals by giving them hospitality jobs, training and skills, a source has reported.
According to the Barking and Dagenham Recorder, the development is similar to Jamie's Kitchen, a project by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver televised by Channel 4, in which he toiled to turn a group of 15 unemployed 16 to 24-year-olds into "top class chefs" for his new restaurant.
Former executive member for regeneration in Barking, Chancellor Sid Kallar, told the publication: "It's one of those things you have to do because the unemployed need training. One less person unemployed and in training has got to be good for the town."
The move also encourages new employment in the light of the 2012 London Olympics, according to the new executive labour chancellor Mick McCarthy, who suggested the prestigious sports event will boost visitor influx into the area.
Some members of the Jamie Oliver project have gone on to further careers since the programme, with some progressing to overseas culinary scholarships, according to Channel 4's website.
