The Rushmere Shopping Centre in County Armagh is currently in talks with five restaurants and a cinema in a £40 million expansion plan which is estimated to create around 400 hospitality jobs if successful, it has been reported.

According to the Portadown Times, if permission is given for the project, the new facilities, which will also include two floors of shops and a three-story car park, may be open by Autumn 2011.

Family restaurants are reported to be involved in the talks, with emphasis being on attracting a varied clientele to the shopping centre.

A spokesman for Rushmere told the publication a quarter of the people living in the borough are under 16, with one of the youngest populations in Northern Ireland, enhancing the need for "quality entertainment and amenities".

"This development will be of benefit to the whole borough and will have a knock-on effect to the existing retail offering at Rushmere," the representative said.

Rushmere's official website claims it offers "a shopping experience that genuinely lives up to the hype".
