Baltic's rooftop restaurant in Newcastle is to reopen after an award-winning chef took it over.

The art gallery's eatery had been closed for nine months before catering company Fresh Element won a franchise to run it, with its co-founder Richard Sim at the helm.

Six, named after its position on the gallery's sixth floor, will officially open its doors on February 23rd, providing restaurant jobs in the region.

The restaurant will focus on traditional British food with a twist, created by Sim, who has not worked in a professional restaurant for two years.

"An opportunity like this only comes along once and you have to grab it with both hands," he told the Newcastle Journal.

"When it comes to restaurants with similar views, I can only think of the Oxo Tower in London and Harvey Nichols in Edinburgh that come close to Six."

Hospitality jobs in the north-east may also be boosted by a new hotel planned for the former site of Scottish & Newcastle's breweries, reports the Journal.

Canadian firm Northland Properties has announced plans to turn the building into a 169-room hotel, creating approximately 150 new positions when it opens in 2011.
